As a professional black woman, I take immense pride in being a two-time graduate (bachelor’s and master’s degree) of North Carolina Central University (NCCU), an esteemed Historically Black College and University located in Durham, NC. The transformative impact of my alma mater on my personal and academic journey is immeasurable. The nurturing environment provided by NCCU as an undergraduate and graduate student laid a firm foundation, shaping not only my academic excellence but also helping me discover and embrace “who I was (am) as a person.”
Throughout my time at NCCU, I was fortunate to receive invaluable mentoring, which played a pivotal role in shaping my professional identity. The guidance and support I received from professors and mentors helped me navigate the complexities of my chosen career path, empowering me to grow into the confident and accomplished professional woman I am today.
Amidst the recent Supreme Court ruling to ban affirmative action, the crucial role of Minority Services Institutions (MSIs) shines even brighter. In this ever-evolving landscape, it is imperative to acknowledge the substantial contributions of MSIs and the positive influence they exert on students from underrepresented backgrounds. Notably, there are four MSI’s designations that serve as beacons of opportunity and empowerment for diverse students, including:
• Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)
• Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs)
• Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander (AANAPISIs)
• Tribal College and Universities (TCUs)
Minority Services Institutions (MSIs) have long been recognized for their commitment to providing a nurturing and empowering environment that fosters academic excellence and personal growth. Through tailored resources, mentorship programs, and culturally responsive education, these institutions empower students to overcome systemic barriers and unlock their full potential.
Considering the recent ruling on affirmative action, the role of MSIs becomes even more vital as engines of social mobility. They serve as bridges of opportunity, enabling students from diverse backgrounds to access higher education and flourish despite facing unique challenges.
As leaders that center our work around equity-centered practices, it is our collective responsibility to advocate for the preservation and continued support of MSIs. Together, we must rally behind these institutions, raising awareness about their transformative impact and advocating for equitable policies that ensure their vital work can thrive. By forging strong partnerships with MSIs, we strengthen the fabric of our academic community and contribute to the creation of an inclusive society where everyone has the opportunity to flourish.
As equity-centered leaders, we can contribute by:
• Supporting MSIs through partnerships and collaborations that amplify their impact and reach.
• Promoting dialogue and advocating for policies that recognize the significance of diversity in higher education.
• Encouraging organizations and institutions to prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, with MSIs as vital partners in this journey.
• Investing in scholarships and funding initiatives that help students from underrepresented backgrounds access education and succeed.
Together, let’s celebrate the resilience and dedication of MSIs in creating a brighter future for our academic communities and society as a whole. Embracing diversity enriches our collective experience and paves the way for a more equitable world.
