Benita Brooks


Dr. Benita R. Brooks is an associate professor of literacy in the School of Teaching and Learning and the Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) for the College of Education at Sam Houston State University. She serves as the director of the Huntsville Immersion Partnership (HIP) After-school Academic Program. She received a $47,000 grant from the Powell Foundation to support HIP for two consecutive years, which totaled $94,000. Recently, the College of Education Awards Committee selected her as the 2020 recipient of the Inclusion Award. Under her leadership as Director of DEI, 68 teacher candidates completed the first diversity certificate program. In addition, she partnered with several undergraduate students to help them create a DEI Student Advisory Board in the College of Education. Benita’s research focuses on teacher candidates developing cross-cultural knowledge and global perspectives through telecollaborative exchanges and teacher candidates developing culturally sustaining practices through equitable literacy oriented critical service-learning projects and through completing a diversity certificate program.​
