I Didn’t Mean That!: Understanding Microaggressions

A CCBD Course

About this Course

Do you know what a microaggression is? Do you recognize one when it occurs? More importantly, do you have the tools to counter microaggressions when you witness or experience them? Racial, sexual, and gender identity microaggressions happen every single day. “Microaggressions are everyday verbal, nonverbal, and environmental slights, snubs, or insults, whether intentional or unintentional which communicates hostile, derogatory, or negative messages to target persons based solely upon their marginalization group membership.” In addition to racial microaggressions, they can be directed towards women, LGBTQ+ persons, and those with disabilities. Oftentimes, microaggressions go unrecognizable to many of those who employ them but not to those who are the target of them. This course will provide an overview of microaggressions and the three distinct ways in which they occur as microassaults, microinsults, and microinvalidations. Additionally, you will learn to identify microaggressions and practical ways to counter them when they occur.
